AT&T Verizon Vs. Sprint T-Mobile

One of the more pernicious ideas that's popped up in recent years is that spectrum auctions' main goal should be to maximize revenue for the government, which inevitably means selling off our airwaves to whoever shells out the most cash. This gets it completely backward, however: The point of spectrum auctions should be to maximize the public good.

While there are plenty of ways to remove this obnoxious adware yourself, Neowin reports that Microsoft may have just done the job for you.

Amazon Retailer Listings Initative

If you can't beat them, join them. At least that's what Amazon is hoping its brick-and-mortar competition will say as it extends an olive branch to retailers that could be beneficial for everyone involved. The Wall Street Journal reports that Amazon is currently in talks with several popular brands, such as Ralph Lauren and J. Crew, along with ten major retailers to start showing listings of their merchandise on Amazon.com. According to the Journal, "Amazon wouldn't sell the goods directly; the listings would be links to the retailers' own sites."

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (Wii U) review

Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze Review

Wonky controls and unforgiving difficulty left me skating on thin ice

In many ways Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is as faithful of a sequel to the beloved Super Nintendo series as any fan could hope for, but despite the eye-popping visuals and controller-clenchingly tense mine cart rides, this sequel comes apart at the seams.

Meet the all-new, completely redesigned YouTube

YouTube Redesign

YouTube just got a massive redesign and it looks a whole lot more... Googly. "The way you watch YouTube keeps changing, so we’re making a few tweaks to YouTube to keep up with you," Google said in a post on its YouTube blog late Thursday. "Starting today you’ll see some changes to make it easier to find what you want to watch on YouTube and collect playlists to watch again and again." YouTube's new look definitely aligns better with the design and flow of other Google sites. While there's bound to be some blowback from users initially — there always is — we think that they'll come around to enjoy the new look soon enough. A couple more screenshots follow below.

Air Force Dumps BlackBerry

The S.S. BlackBerry keeps springing leaks when it comes to its business with the United States military. Just over a week after the United States Army placed an order for 7,000 Samsung phones that will be used to replace legacy BlackBerry devices, CrackBerry reports that the U.S. Air Force has similarly ordered 5,000 iPhones devices that will also replace older BlackBerry phones. Even worse, CrackBerry says that this is just the start and that all Air Force staff will have their BlackBerry devices replaced with iOS and Android devices at some point in the future.

BGR-ios-7-review-5

Even though iOS 7 is likely very close to being released, Apple on Friday released iOS 7.0.6 to fix problems with SSL connection verification. The latest release comes just under a month after the release of iOS 7.0.5, which contained several bug fixes for iPhones released in China.

Samsung Galaxy Gear 2

Samsung's first smartwatch was a dud. Even when Samsung was pitching the device to the media during briefings, representatives couldn't always keep a straight face while selling the Galaxy Gear's features. It was rushed to market in an effort to head off Apple's iWatch — which doesn't exist even today — and it was a bad product. In 2014, however, Samsung will look to make amends and since Apple's iWatch still doesn't exist, Samsung can easily take an early lead in the wearable war with the right product. Interestingly, however, Samsung might not only be battling Apple with its next-generation wearables, it might square off with longtime partner Google as well.

World's Ugliest Smartwatch Huawei

We see a lot of gadgets here at BGR. Some of them look very nice and some of them don't. But it's been a while since we've seen a cut-off-its-head-with-a-silver-blade-and-stuff-its-mouth-with-garlic level of ugly on par with the smartwatch the Huawei has designed.

Amazon Set-Top Box Release Date

Apple is getting ready to launch a major refresh of its Apple TV set-top box in April but it looks like Amazon is going to steal some of Apple's thunder with a set-top box of its own. Re/code reports that Amazon will unveil its own homemade set-top box in March that will be powered by a forked version of Google's Android operating system that's similar to the one used for Amazon's Kindle Fire tablets. Re/code says that most of the details it's heard about the set-top box are widely expected and that it hasn't been able to confirm whether the box will also double as a gaming hub. Amazon has also been rumored to be creating an Android-based gaming console although that seems like it will release much later in the year if it ever happens.
