Smaller cable providers realize cord cutters are the future
Big providers like Comcast and Time Warner Cable may want to cling to the past but it looks like smaller cable providers seem to know that cord cutting is actually the future. The Wall Street Journal reports that smaller cable providers are increasingly placing more emphasis on their broadband offerings and less on TV packages as consumers have shown that they would much rather have a faster Internet service than hundreds of channels they never watch.

Is this the beginning of the end of the Comcast-TWC merger?
FCC chairman Tom Wheeler just gave a tough speech about the state of broadband competition in the United States and it seems to bode very poorly for Comcast's proposed merger with Time Warner Cable. Per The Washington Post , Wheeler ripped into what he said were broadband "duopolies" in many markets while noting that "meaningful competition for high-speed wired broadband is lacking."

Samsung CFO says Q2 earnings will be ‘not that good’
Despite the continued expansion of Samsung's enormous international footprint, the company's CFO Lee Sang Hoon says second quarter earnings for 2014 are going to be "not that good." Bloomberg reports that Samsung is expected to post an operating profit of 8.4 trillion won ($8.2 billion) for the quarter, a significant slide from the record performance of 10.2 trillion won in Q3 2013.

The FCC wants states to stop killing municipal fiber networks that put cable to shame
Over the past several years, we've seen brave state legislatures rise up to tackle the most dangerous threat to the American way of life: Small towns that hate their incumbent cable companies and want to build their own broadband networks. DSLReports points out that Federal Communications Commission chairman Tom Wheeler has written a new blog post where he points out that some towns and cities have successfully built their own high-speed fiber networks and that those municipalities haven't yet succumbed to communism.

PayPal is itching to help Apple with its mobile payments platform
It really looks like Apple is getting into the mobile payments game. Last week, The Wall Street Journal reported that Apple was working on a mobile payments system and earlier this month, Apple was awarded a patent that detailed a method for sending secure payments over Wi-Fi, Bluetooth Low Energy, or NFC. Also late last year, Apple began deploying iBeacons in its own retail stores, a move that many saw as a stepping stone to mobile payments in its own stores.
