Apple Watch April 24 Store Availability

Apple has received plenty of criticism for the way it decided to handle the Apple Watch launch – opting for online orders only and announcing a “fake” April 24th retail store release date – but it turns out that eager Apple fans looking to line up in front of a store this Friday to buy the Apple Watch will be able to, after all. Before you get too excited about the prospect though, you should know that it’s not regular Apple stores that will stock Apple Watch units on April 24th. Instead, Apple is going to make the highly coveted device available from certain fashion retailers around the world.

Apple Watch Launch

In a leaked video obtained by Mac4Ever, Apple retail executive Angela Ahrendts explains why Apple chose to limit Apple Watch orders to online only. As we detailed not too long ago, any folks hoping to just casually stroll into an Apple retail store this Friday and purchase a device on the spot will be sorely disappointed.

One of the more interesting tidbits from the video is Ahrendts discussing whether or not the Apple Watch ordering process might be applied to other product launches. Indeed, many have recently wondered whether or not celebratory iPhone launches, complete with lines out the store and cheering employees, might be a thing of the past.

Tidal Vs. Pandora Vs. Spotify

When Tidal made its big media push at the end of March, the core message was clear: While other streaming music services like Spotify and Pandora pay a pittance to artists, Tidal offers musicians a better deal. Unfortunately, Tidal also opted to use super stars like Nicki Minaj and Beyonce as spokespersons for the app. The result was the ultimate mixed message: You should feel sorry about how little money Nicki makes.

Retina MacBook Performance

Though Apple's recently unveiled Retina 12-inch MacBook is set to hit store shelves for a few days, a Geekbench benchmark of Apple's newest hardware has shed some light on what type of CPU performance users can expect under the hood.

The Geekbench tests measured Apple's entry-level 1.1GHz Retina MacBook featuring Intel's new Core M processors. Tested twice, Apple's svelte laptop delivered two single-core scores of 1924 and 2044 along with multi-core scores of 4038 and 4775.

But how do those numbers stack up to, say, the MacBook Air?

Finnish developer Rovio, creator of the Angry Birds games and all of the subsequent spin-offs, yesterday reported the company's first big decline in profits since the original Angry Birds game launched in 2009 (via VentureBeat ).

Though the company's mobile gaming business did see a slight 16 percent rise in revenue, a huge drop in Rovio's licensing business, which includes the various toys, t-shirts, and action figures related to its games, was the true culprit of the company's decline last year. Not to mention other mega-hit franchises, like Candy Crush Saga, slowly taking the once-dominant spotlight of Angry Birds.

The company's revenue dropped to €158.3 million ($170 million) in 2014, from €173.5 million ($185.6 million) in 2013. Likewise, Rovio's operating profit also fell last year to €10 million from €36.5 million in 2013 and €76.8 million in 2012. Rovio CEO Pekka Rantala hopes a steady release of new games and a renewed focus on advertising will pivot the company in the right direction for 2015.

“2014 results show that steps in the game portfolio, free to play competency building and advertising are going in the right direction. I am confident that with new simplified organisation and clearer vision, we will be back to the path of growth in 2015,” said Pekka Rantala, who took over as chief executive last fall, in a statement.

Rovio launched six new games in 2014, no doubt helping to bump up its mobile gaming revenue, with more than 600 million new game downloads for the company. It's also already launched two new games in 2015, Jelly Jam and Angry Birds Stella POP!, which Rantala hopes will keep the brand's momentum going through the first half of 2015.

Although it's not to be released until the summer of 2016, Rantala also points to the buzz surrounding the Angry Birds movie as a boon to the company's wilting licensing business. The company will produce the movie, which is set to star Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad, Maya Rudolph, and Peter Dinklage.

Rovio no doubt hopes for the film to pick up the slack where Angry Birds Toons, Rovio's 2013-launched animated kids TV show, has failed to increase the company's licensing business year-over-year. Rantala notes that the film already has received "very positive reactions from major retail and license partners as well as from consumer focus groups", which he and the company predict will translate into booming licensing deals in the coming years.

Apple Watch Apple Pay Features

Apple Pay has been acclaimed as the smoothest and most convenient mobile wallet system yet. There's just one problem, though -- the system it's trying to replace just isn't that inconvenient.

Google Glass 2 Release

Google Glass has come and gone, and definitely wasn't an iPad . Google wanted to launch a trend-setting new device that would break new ground and shape the industry for decades to come. Some people thought it would, and a few trigger happy venture capitalists even built an entire fund focused on Glass development. Then Glass died, and Google is the one that killed it.

But the idea of Google Glass will live on, and as it turns out, Google already has plans to resurrect its face-worn wearable in the not-so-distant future.

HTC One M9 Release Date

HTC's flagship smartphone for 2014 was one of the most impressive smartphones of the year last year, and it looks like we're now less than two months away from seeing the debut of the company's 2015 flagship Android handset. We reported last week that HTC had sent out invitations to a big press conference in Barcelona on March 1st ahead of the annual Mobile World Congress trade show, and we said that the company's new HTC One M9 would likely be the star of the show.

Now, a new report from Bloomberg confirms the upcoming HTC One M9 unveiling, and it suggests that HTC has a big surprise in store for us as well.
