iOS 7 Jailbreak Security

After the drama that ensured following the “official” iOS 7 untethered jailbreak release, well-known gadget hacker Geohot has cleared the waters surrounding the new Evasi0n 7 tool by reversing in, looking through the code and posting a lengthy write-up on it. The iPhone and PlayStation jailbreaker did not find any security issues with the iOS 7 jailbreak.

21st Century Fox CEO Cable Bundles

It seems that everyone hates cable bundles these days, including the creators of South Park who recently ridiculed cable companies as nipple-rubbing monopolist greedheads intent on shaking consumers down for every last dime. But there are two groups that still think bundles are terrific: The cable companies themselves and the entertainment studios that benefit from consumers subsidizing content they'll never watch with their monthly cable bills. Multichannel reports that 21st Century Fox CEO Chase Carey recently lashed out at cable critics and said that bundles were good for most consumers even if they didn't know it.

Windows 8 Hatred Explained

Let's be clear: I think that Windows 8 is in many ways a good operating system. But it is also a very polarizing one among longtime Windows users and that's something Microsoft will ignore at its own peril. First, let's go through Windows 8's obvious virtues — it runs much more smoothly than earlier versions of Windows, it starts up more quickly and is generally a more stable platform than Windows 7. However, for a sizable chunk of PC users these plusses are outweighed by the giant minus of the big changes Microsoft made to the traditional Windows user interface.

Nexus 5 Sold Out

Bad news, Nexus fans: if you haven't already ordered a new Nexus 5 smartphone, you're not getting one anytime soon. Google released the Nexus 5 on October 31st and inventory for initial shipments was depleted within hours. Shipping times continued to slip, and understandably so — in our review, we called the Nexus 5 the only Android phone hardcore Android fans should care about this holiday season, and in a follow-up we said it's an unprecedented value. As of Tuesday morning, the black 16GB Nexus 5 model is completely sold out. "We are out of inventory. Please check back soon," Google said on the Play store, giving no indication of when the handset might be back in stock. New orders placed for the 16GB white model ship in 4-5 weeks, the 32GB black model ships in 2-3 weeks and the 32GB white model ships by November 26th. Google doesn't share sales numbers though, so we may never know if sales have been as strong as they seem or if supply is just extremely light.

Shoot and Score with ‘Smart’ Basketball

Tech columnist Ed Baig took to the court to test a new “smart basketball” equipped with nine sensors that communicate with an iPhone or iPad via Bluetooth wireless technology. The 94Fifty basketball and associated iOS app, made by InfoMotion Sports Technologies, tracks performance by measuring speed and pressure applied to the ball. It also coaches aspiring hoops stars with voice feedback. Users can work on drills or challenge other players. “My two small kids were engaged, and they were excited when they improved their scores,” Baig reports.

iPhone 5s Commercial

Following the recent launch of Apple's new iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c, the latter has been the focus of all of the company's TV advertisements. This was seemingly a good play, since early estimates from industry watchers suggest that Apple's iPhone 5s pretty much sells itself. The company is apparently now ready to put some of its massive marketing budget to work for the 5s, however, as it recently released its first television ad for the flagship phone. Dubbed "Metal Mastered," the ad simply shows liquid gold slowly being formed into the gold iPhone 5s housing. In fact, Apple's first iPhone 5s ad is pretty much the same commercial the company used to introduce the world to the iPhone 5c.
