Sony today announced a new advanced image sensor designed for use in smartphones, which uses a new "stacked" design to cut down on size while introducing improved image quality and faster speeds. Apple uses Sony sensors in its iPhones and iPads, so it is likely that Sony's stacked sensor technology will make it into future iOS devices at some point.



The new 21-megapixel Exmor RS IMX230 sensor is built with a chip that stacks a pixel section and a circuit section on top of one another, which allows Sony to build improvements into each aspect of the sensor individually, leading to dramatic improvements. Sony's been using stacked sensor technology since 2012, but its newest sensor introduces new autofocus and HDR technology.



According to Sony, the IMX230 sensor is the first CMOS sensor for smartphones that includes plane phase detection autofocus signal processing with 192 autofocus points, resulting in much faster tracking of moving subjects that happens almost instantaneously.

The sensor also includes support for full 21-megapixel HDR pictures and 4K HDR video, resulting in better lighting in high-contrast scenes. HDR or High Dynamic Range imaging captures separate images with different exposures, combining them into one image that improves detail and color.
The new IMX230 is a type 1/2.4 stacked CMOS image sensor with a significantly improved 21 effective megapixels, and it is also equipped with a newly developed signal processing function. These features fulfill the growing needs in smartphone photography for high-speed autofocus (image plane phase detection AF) and clear, high-quality capture of bright and dark areas even in backlit scenes (HDR imaging). Image plane phase detection AF is a technology used in mirrorless interchangeable-lens cameras, and HDR imaging now supports not only 4K (4096 x 2160) high-resolution videos but also still images.

Sony is known for making some of the best image sensors available, and Apple has long used Sony sensors in its iOS devices. Sony's new image sensor will begin shipping in April of 2015, and while it is likely the new sensor technology will make its way into Apple's iPhones and iPads, it is unknown when that might occur.



Apple does not typically use high-megapixel sensors in its iPhone or iPad, but Sony is planning on producing a 16-megapixel version of the IMX230 in 2015, which would be appropriate for iOS devices. It's possible Apple could use the 16-megapixel version of the IMX230 in the 2015 iPhone 6s and 6s Plus, but it's also possible that the sensor won't be utilized until 2016 or later as Apple often uses slightly older sensors in its devices.



Tom's Hardware believes that the next-generation iPhone 6 and 6 Plus may incorporate either the upcoming 16-megapixel IMX240 sensor from Sony or the 13-megapixel IMX135, which Sony first introduced in January of 2013.



It's not known exactly which sensor is used in the current iPhone and iPad, but camera experts have speculated that the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus use the Sony ISX014 sensor, an 8-megapixel sensor that Sony first introduced in October of 2012.


















In late October, Apple's VP of iPhone marketing Greg Joswiak sat down for an interview with Re/code's Ina Fried and Walt Mossberg at the site's inaugural Code Conference, answering questions about iOS 8.0.1, Apple Pay, and the Apple Watch.



While we initially covered the interview when it took place, Re/code has now posted the full video footage of Joswiak's appearance at the conference, which is well worth watching for Apple enthusiasts.






During the interview, Joswiak apologized for the iOS 8.0.1 bug that bricked many iPhone 6 and 6 Plus devices, commented on the Apple Pay situation with Rite Aid and CVS, and hinted at possible Apple Watch pricing.

Joswiak's interview occurred at the same time as Tim Cook's October interview with The Wall Street Journal, and a full video of that appearance was also released earlier this week.


















A rare working Apple 1 computer has sold for a record $905,000 at a Bonhams auction in New York, reports Reuters . Estimates suggested the motherboard might fetch between $300,000 and $500,000, but it ended up selling for far more.

The motherboard is believed to be one of approximately 50 Apple 1 computers that were originally constructed by Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak in Steve Jobs' garage for sale in The Byte Shop. The motherboard is numbered "01-0070."






Few Apple 1 computers survive today, and the one sold at the New York auction has fetched the highest price seen yet. The buyer of the computer remains unknown. Each Apple 1 originally sold for $666.66, and approximately 200 total units were produced.



Last year, two working Apple 1 computers complete with their original cardboard box were sold by German auction house Breker. One of the machines sold for $330,000, while a second fully functional Apple 1 computer sold for $671,400 as it included a letter from Steve Jobs intended for its original owner.


















Since news of Apple's iWatch development first surfaced in 2012, supply chain rumors and analyst speculation have all pegged its display size at a modest 1.3 to 1.7 inches. Earlier today, Reuters released a report suggesting the display will be much larger than anyone expected, coming in at 2.5-inches diagonally.



MacRumors forum member Lewis Dorigo has previously speculated that the iWatch would have a 2.45-inch display with a 480x640 display, and has even created a crude mockup depicting what an iWatch of that size would look like on a wrist.

On his blog, Dorigo goes deeper into his predictions for the iWatch, explaining that a 2.45-inch iWatch with a Retina display of 480x640 would have same pixel density (326 ppi) as the iPhone 5s, the iPhone 5c, and the Retina iPad mini. He's speculates on what a 2.45-inch iWatch's UI might look like, with the creation of several mockups with an iOS 7-style design.



While several rumors have suggested the iWatch will indeed run iOS, it is still possible that Apple could go in an entirely different direction with the device, creating a standalone interface or an iOS-based interface that deviates from the iPhone's interface.



Dorigo suggests that 80 pixels of the screen might be reserved for a CarPlay-style digital home button, leaving a 240 pixel space for apps, but that's pure speculation -- Apple could also choose to place a physical home button on the side of the device.



Along with a home button built into the screen, Dorigo imagines a largely touch-based interface, where Siri is activated via a press on the screen and individual apps have large, easy-to-press buttons. He also speculates on what the interface might look like when connected to an iPhone, as the iWatch is rumored to be heavily integrated with existing iOS devices.

The status bar shows the current connectivity of the device that the watch is connected to. If it's connected to an iPhone, it shows the iPhone's cellular and wifi signal strengths. If it's not connected to a device, it just says "iWatch", much like iPods (and iPads without cellular) do.

While Dorigo's speculation gives a look at what a larger iWatch might look like, the device's screen resolution and prospective user interface remain a mystery at this time.



According to rumors, the iWatch is expected to include a range of health sensors, such as a pulse monitor, along with wireless charging capabilities. The iWatch is expected to make its debut in the fall, possibly at an October event.

Cortana Video Windows Phone

The Windows Phone 8.1 leaks continue to roll out as the Microsoft Build Developer Conference inches closer. Just a day after the reveal of Cortana's appearance, Unleash the Phones has come forward with footage of the Windows Phone digital assistant in action. The video begins with the initial set up, in which you will be asked to allow Cortana to access your information and sign in to your Microsoft account. Once you're logged in, Cortana will quickly "absorb the entire internet" before asking you what you would like to be called.
