Apple Discounts

The days surrounding Black Friday and Cyber Monday are always packed with some of the deepest discounts you'll find all year long on gadgets and just about anything else. Not everyone wants to purchase everything on their holiday shopping lists in one sitting, however. As is the case each and every year, sometimes people who choose to wait get rewarded if they're willing to dig — or if others are willing to do the digging for them.

Now, one such reward has arisen in the form of a killer sale on Apple gear currently taking place online at B&H Photo.

iPhone 6 Sapphire Display Cover

Apple had long been rumored to add an ultra-strong sapphire glass display to this year’s iPhone 6 models, made in partnership with GT Advanced Technologies, but as soon as the iPhone maker launched this year’s iOS handsets it became clear that sapphire covers were not used on either the iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus. Since then, GTAT filed for bankruptcy, blaming Apple’s draconian supply contract for its doom, and The Wall Street Journal has learned more inside information about why the iPhone 6 doesn’t have a sapphire screen.

These are the most amazing reactions to iOS 8

iOS 8 Features

Some of the reactions to Apple's iOS 7 were pretty amazing when it was first release last year. It was a brand new operating system with a brand new look and people either loved it or hated it.

Another year and another update are now upon us, and here are some of the most amazing reactions we have come across. They range from rage to excitement, to joy, to heartbreak. One of the popular themes seems to be the 5GB of free space required to install iOS 8 over the air, which could be pretty tight on a 16GB iPhone. One trick if you haven't updated yet is to use iTunes, which requires much less free space.

Several months ago, T-Mobile US launched an iPhone "test drive" program allowing users to test an iPhone 5s on the carrier's network for seven days free of charge. The program helps users decide if T-Mobile's coverage is satisfactory in the areas they frequent, and also gives users unfamiliar with the iPhone a free introduction to the platform.

tmobile_test_drive

With Apple ready to release new iPhone hardware and software, T-Mobile has informed Re/code that it will continue offering the program and plans to upgrade the test drive units to iOS 8 within days of its public launch this Wednesday. T-Mobile also has plans to begin offering iPhone 6 units through the testing program, but it will take some time for those to become available as supplies will be tight in the early weeks after release and they will unsurprisingly be prioritized for customer purchases.
“We don’t have a definitive timeline, but we do intend to switch over in future,” a T-Mobile spokesperson said. “There are a variety of factors that affect that timeline, (including) product availability.”

T-Mobile's test drive program is one component of its ongoing "Un-carrier" initiative in which has sought to differentiate itself from the other major U.S. carriers. The latest piece of the program, unveiled last week, includes support for Wi-Fi calling and a partnership with inflight Internet service provider Gogo to allow T-Mobile customers to use text, picture message, and visual voicemail services on Gogo-enabled airplanes free of charge.

iPhone 6 Components Leak

Ho-hum: Another day, another major iPhone 6 component leak. Nowhereelse.fr has snagged a new picture that for the first time shows us the iPhone 6's motherboard. Nowhereelse.fr notices that you can't see the iPhone 6's A8 processor in this particular picture of the motherboard although MacRumors has done a nice job of showing us exactly where the chip should be on the motherboard using the same leaked photo.

Surface Pro 3 vs MacBook Air TV Ads

Apple may have dumped its Mac vs PC ads a long time ago, but that doesn’t mean such ad comparisons are over. It’s now Microsoft’s time to troll Apple with comparison ads, this time using the Surface Pro 3 to take on one of Apple’s most iconic laptops out there in the MacBook Air.

in-app-purchaseThe European Commission announced today that Apple has not adequately addressed the issue of unauthorized in-app purchases, providing "no concrete and immediate solutions" to the problem, reports Reuters. This subject of in-app purchases within free apps was the focus of a recent EU investigation following complaints from several consumer groups in European Union member countries.

Apple said in a statement that it would address these concerns, but failed to disclose when and how it would make any necessary changes.
Apple takes great pride in leading the industry in parental controls that are incredibly easy to use and help ensure a great experience for parents and children on the App Store. The parental controls in iOS are strong, intuitive and customizable. And over the last year we made sure any app which enables customers to make in-app purchases is clearly marked. We've also created a Kids Section on the App Store with even stronger protections to cover apps designed for children younger than 13.

These controls go far beyond the features of others in the industry. But we are always working to strengthen the protections we have in place, and we're adding great new features with iOS 8, such as Ask to Buy, giving parents even more control over what their kids can buy on the App Store.

Our goal is to continue to provide the best experience for our customers and we will continue to work with the EC member states to respond to their concerns.

Apple faces legal action from European Union member countries if it is found to be in violation of the EU consumer protection law. The company currently is being investigated by Italy's Antitrust and Competition Authority, which is reviewing in-app purchasing policies for apps that are labeled as "free." Apple faced similar scrutiny in the US, recently settling with the FTC in an agreement that provided $32 million in refunds to parents whose children purchased unauthorized in-app items.

Apple's lawyers had tattled on Google to the FTC in an effort to point out that Apple was not alone in experiencing issues with unauthorized in-app purchases by children, but the EU today praised Google for its changes to address the problem, including moves to ban the use of the word "free" when referring to apps with in-app purchases.

Apple has implemented a series of changes in recent versions of iOS that prevent errant in-app purchases. iOS now requires users to enter their passcode before initiating an in-app purchase, notifies consumers before an in-app purchase is made and obtains express consent from consumers before billing them for an in-app purchase. More recently, Apple added an "Offers In-App Purchases" disclosure to app detail pages and inserted an "In-App Purchases" label for apps listed in its featured Top App Charts

T-Mobile Overage Fees Campaign

T-Mobile certainly knows a good opportunity when it sees it. The "Uncarrier" on Monday unleashed a public relations barrage against its rivals that urged wireless customers to sign a Change.org petition telling Verizon and AT&T to dump overage fees on mobile data plans.

jobs_poseDon Melton has a long history with Steve Jobs and Apple, working at NeXT and then moving to Apple where he is known for his work on Safari and WebKit. To commemorate Steve Jobs' birthday earlier this year, Melton recounted his memorable encounters with Jobs in a post he recently published on his blog.

Melton was not a confidant of Jobs, just an employee who had the opportunity to be around the Apple co-founder on occasion. Jobs likely thought of Melton as the “Safari Guy” and knew Melton's real name, which was considered an honor.

Melton recounts the first time he met Steve Jobs at a NeXT presentation in the late 80s that unfortunately was scheduled during everyone's lunch break. Like many encounters with Jobs, Melton remembered Jobs' demeanor, but not a word of what he said.

Obviously he wanted us to quiet down. You could tell because he paused several times for us to hush ourselves. And out of respect, awe, and probably some fear, we all tried our best to do so. But, dammit, the room was now packed and that many people just swallowing food makes a lot of noise. Sitting so close, I felt especially self-conscious.

Who the hell scheduled him to speak at that time? Knucklehead. It’s entirely possible that person was taken out later and shot.

Anyway, I do remember Steve’s seriousness and apparent impatience that day. But not a thing he said.

Melton paints Jobs not as a "mercurial ogre or cartoon autocrat," but as a very busy CEO with little time for “yes men,” timid employees or those who didn't know what they were doing.

Steve expected excellence. Which is why he so often got it.

He knew when something was right, but he didn’t always tell you what he wanted when it wasn’t. And he was very clear when he didn’t like it. Some misinterpreted this behavior as being overly critical, but it was actually time-saving clarity, albeit uncomfortable on occasion.

Melton has several interesting tidbits about his work on Safari, including Jobs' distaste for the stand-alone bookmarks window in the web browser and the decision to add a page load indication into Safari's address bar, a design decision that eventually hurt Safari's reputation because the "in-your-face progress bar made it seem slower to the user."

Beyond his work persona, Melton also shares some stories about the personal side of Jobs, the real man who has children and, at one point, a cranky new puppy. Melton ends his story with his somber memories of Steve in his final years, dealing with a disease that "had ravaged him." Melton's piece is long, but worth a read for his insight into a corporate leader who was intense, but also real.
