Retro 3D Shooter 'Space Qube' Named App of the Week, Available for Free [iOS Blog]

Described as a 'retro-futuristic 3D' shoot-em-up, Space Qube has been designated by Apple as this week's App of the Week. The game, created by Qubit Entertainment and launched in early 2013, will be free on the App Store for the next week.
Normally priced at $2.99, the game tasks players with building their own personal spaceships and running through "endless levels of Alien mayhem," besting high scores and taking down bosses.
The extensive voxel-based ship editor allows users to build an endless variety of ships, share them online, or download another player's creation for themselves. Most players reviewing the game on the App Store praise these ship-building and customization elements of the game, but forewarn future players of in-app purchases down the road.

Microsoft's Expansion on iOS Continues With New MSN-Branded Apps

Microsoft today released a suite of five consumer apps under the MSN brand, bringing news, health, and other previously Windows Phone-exclusive apps from the Bing team to the iOS platform (via ZDNet ). This launch follows the recent expansion of Microsoft's Office for iOS suite to the iPhone that produced standalone versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint to Apple's smartphone devices.

Apple Planning New Retail Store in Williamsburg, Brooklyn [Mac Blog]

Apple may finally be opening its first Apple Store location in Brooklyn, according to The New York Post . Information gained from brokerage community sources reveals that Apple has signed a long-term lease for a 20,000 square-foot store at 247 Bedford Avenue at the corner of North 3rd Street in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

The New York Post states that the new Apple Store will be a two-story brick structure and "is getting a whole new look, featuring dramatic, arched windows." The project will reportedly be completed in April of 2015. There was no confirmation yet on when Apple will move in to begin renovation, or how much it will pay for the location.
Apple already has a handful of retail stores in New York City, including Fifth Avenue, SoHo, Upper West Side, Grand Central, and West 14th Street. Rumors of a Brooklyn/Williamsburg store have circulated for years, with various reports citing a number of possible locations.

Microsoft under Satya Nadella truly is a new company. Microsoft on Thursday announced that you'll now be able to use its Microsoft Office mobile apps on your iPhone or iPad even if you don't have a subscription to Office 365 — in other words, Office for iOS just became a free mobile app. And don't think that Microsoft has left Android users out in the cold either, as the company says that Office for Android tablets will be free to use without an Office 365 subscription in the near future as well.

After an iPhone 6 picture from China suggested earlier this week that Apple may have built some special 32GB iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus units, which are on display in a few stores in the region, French publication Consomac has been able to find out more details about said device and has even confirmed its existence in the process. Unfortunately, there’s no good news for potential iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus buyers looking for 32GB versions.

Apple's September iPhone 6 and Apple Watch event marked the first time the company held an event at the Flint Center on the campus of De Anza College since the introduction of the original iMac in 1998, and The Wall Street Journal reports the latest event resulted in Apple paying the college over $1 million for the privilege, including costs for campus disruption and security.
Campus police, Santa Clara County sheriffs, and Mountain View police all contributed to the security detail that was on site for nearly a month leading up to the event.
Apple's next event takes place tomorrow, but will be a much smaller affair held in the Town Hall auditorium on the company's headquarters campus in Cupertino. The event kicks off at 10:00 AM Pacific Time, and the company is expected to unveil new iPads, introduce updated iMacs with a Retina display on at least the larger model, and offer a final look at OS X Yosemite before its public launch.
According to the records, the cost included a “disruption fee” to the college of $500,000, rental fees for campus buildings and around-the-clock security involving more than 35 officers from three departments. [...]
The agreement was dated Aug. 14, almost a month before its event, but it refers to a confidentiality agreement signed in June by the district and Apple.
The agreement specifies that confidentiality is a “key element,” in order to achieve the “surprise and delight that characterize” Apple’s marketing.
Apple agreed to pay $55,000 to use the college’s Media and Learning Center, $92,000 for the Campus Center and nearly $10,000 for two parking lots. Apple was also responsible for restoring the balustrades surrounding the sunken garden where the temporary structure was located, at an estimated cost of $400,000 to $450,000.
