Google is giving you free international calling… but there’s a huge catch

Everyone loves the idea of being able to make free international calls on their phones and now Google is letting you do so... but only for a minute. Google this week announced that "the first minute of calls to phone numbers in twenty-five different countries is now free" if you make those calls using Google's Hangouts mobile app.

Microsoft announced on Monday that the November system update had begun rolling out to members of the Xbox One update preview program. The November update is another set of relatively minor improvements and additions, but brings one highly anticipated feature to the console that was hinted at earlier this month: custom backgrounds.

Apple’s own NFC-enabled payment product isn’t yet available to consumers, as it will be enabled later in October on the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus following an iOS 8 update, but it’s already seen as the “player to beat,” by Morgan Stanley. Previously, Microsoft's Bill Gates also praised Apple's contactless payments initiative.

After some very revealing leaks earlier in the year, Amazon is now just days away from unveiling its one-of-a-kind 3D smartphone and the online retailer is already looking for ways to convert customers in a very crowded market. LG on Thursday decided to do something handset makers rarely do, which is to launch an accessory for a device that doesn’t exist yet. Europe may have some looming net neutrality issues of its own

It’s not just U.S. consumers that need to worry, at least for the time being, about recent decisions that affect net neutrality, The Next Web reports. The European Union’s Industry Committee voted on Tuesday to implement an anti-roaming charges plan that could also allow Internet service providers to prioritize certain types of traffic as long as they’re marked as “specialized services” and don’t interfere with other services provided by ISPs.
Weeks before launch, Samsung reportedly having Galaxy S5 production woes

It's now crunch time for Galaxy S5 production but Korean publication ETNews reports that Samsung is still having trouble manufacturing enough Galaxy S5 cameras in time for the device's launch on April 11th. ETNews' sources say that as of March 16th Samsung still hasn't gone into mass production of the Galaxy S5 because yields for its camera lens module are now only in the 20% to 30% range. Samsung is apparently having trouble manufacturing 16-megapixel camera modules that are thin enough to fit in the Galaxy S5's frame without hurting the quality of the lenses within the camera module.

Now that the first season of True Detective has ended, we're all anxiously awaiting season 2. Which sleuthing duo will replace Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson? Has the story of the Yellow King truly ended? Will Rustin Cohle ever shave that awful mustache? It'll be months before we have the answers to any of these questions, but for now, at least we have some very creative fans to take our minds off the extended departure of HBO's best new series. In this video, YouTuber CREWgaming has "gamified" True Detective, shrinking Rust and Marty down to 8-bit (or so) proportions. It's a fun distraction, but nevertheless contains plenty of harsh language and a few spoilers. You have been warned.
Court-appointed monitor slams Apple’s stonewalling in eBook case

Apple's eBook price-fixing fiasco is being dragged kicking and screaming into the new year. The Wall Street Journal reports that Apple's monitoring lawyer, Michael Bromwich, is frustrated with both Apple's refusal to cooperate with him and the company's dubious portrayal of his team's activities. Apple has leveled complaints against Bromwich several times, citing overcharged rates and overstepped boundaries. The company even attempted to have Bromwich removed from the case entirely earlier this month, but the Justice Department refused to honor those demands.
